Document Summary

Lecture 20: incentive programs and sustainable use. Traditional societies: 3000 million people/20% of the earth"s surface, 40% fishing, 33% gathering, 28% hunting. Marginalized populations: live side by side with wildlife, compete for resources. The human population: marginalized populations, competition, traditional societies, direct use of wildlife. When competition exceeds resource availability: not enough to support the habitat. If direct use is no longer sustainable: community wither dies or has to relocate because resources are depleted. Recognize that most conservation will have to be achieved through conservation in human social space= incentive driven conservation. Only makes problems worse: a positive incentive is to encourage people, example: snow leopard enterprises- people"s sheep get eaten by snow leopard, so people kill snow leopards to protect their profits. So this company encourages people to use raw wool to marketable products for a profit so if their sheep get killed they can easily replace it with another.
