ENWC201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Sandhill Crane, Ostrich, Natural Selection
Document Summary
Behavior: the actions or reactions of an organisms in response to external or internal. Study of the ecological and evolutionary basis for animal behavior. The roles of behavior in enabling animals to adapt to their ecological niches. Range from simple behavioral changes to complex problem solving. Different songs between different individuals in the same species. Some involve a combination of innate behaviors and experience. Imprinting: learning limited to a specific critical period in life and is generally irreversible. Now they use whooping crane hand puppets to allow the chicks to imprint on a whooping crane (the black and red coloring was very important for their imprintation) Using a small open air plane, they taught them how to migrate as well. Daily activity patterns of animals with a regular pattern of about 24 hours. Tarsier = nocturnal (most active at night) Ostrich = diurnal (most active during the day) Mountain lion = crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk)
