ENWC201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Sri Lanka, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Strict Nature Reserve
Protected Areas
● Toolkit
○ Ethics, values, attitudes + endangered species act = wildlife conservation
● Habitat loss is number one threat to terrestrial wildlife
● Protected help with overexploitation, protecting from extinction, but not as effective for
pollution and invasives
○ Many protected species threatened by invasive species
● Not a new concept - sherwood forest
○ Put aside by royalty - for hunting deer
○ Not considered national park
● 1864 yellowstone created set aside by act of dedication
○ For the people
○ No park service yet
● European national parks to protect landscape - Africa to protect wildlife
● PAs are critical to conserving many species
● There are a component of most national or regional strategies for conservation
● A requirement of various agreement / conventions
● IUCN classify protected areas
○ Helpful when making new protected areas
● IUCN Classic Classifications
○ Category 1a: strict nature reserves
■ Research
■ Idea are strictly for reserving nature
■ Only human nature is only suppose to be research
■ hiking/camping not allowed
■ Sri lanka clouds forest
○ Category 1b: wilderness areas
■ Some recreational use
■ Indian peaks
■ No wheels or mechanical or engines allowed - no biking
■ Hiking, some allow camping
■ Low impact- get in, get out
■ Smallest one in NA is Allegheny islands wilderness (PA)
○ Category 1 overall
■ Only primitive recreation
■ Primary focus is on biodiversity, ecosystem processes/services
■ Hardest to set up - taking an ecosystem completely out
■ If set aside then people won't appreciate nature, that's why there are
more categories
○ Category 2: national parks
■ Somewhat restricted
Document Summary

European national parks to protect landscape - africa to protect wildlife. Pas are critical to conserving many species. There are a component of most national or regional strategies for conservation. A requirement of various agreement / conventions. Only human nature is only suppose to be research. No wheels or mechanical or engines allowed - no biking. Smallest one in na is allegheny islands wilderness (pa) Primary focus is on biodiversity, ecosystem processes/services. Hardest to set up - taking an ecosystem completely out.
