3 sources of information about crime: uniform crime report (ucr, national crime victimization survey (ncvs, self-report surveys (srs) Ucr strengths: it shows trends and patterns of crime over time, it provides crime data at different levels. Ucr weaknesses: recording practices are inconsistent. Police departments are inconsistent in how they document crime (discretion in arrests, reports, and in what to record: multiple offenses are not recorded, only the most serious crime. They do it voluntarily, it is not mandated. Rural, small police departments, etc: not all crimes are reported to the police. Dark figure of crime: refers to those crimes that go unreported to officials. #1 lowest reported crime to the police- rape, #2- aggravated assault. Ncvs strengths: gets at the dark figure of crime and why crimes go unreported, provides information on the victims of crime (attitudes, cost of crime, and punishment, based on probability sampling (random and representative)
