CHAPTER 8: SUPPORTING MATERIALS
• Supporting materials
o Supporting materials are key to a successful speech
o They help to augment your credibility
▪ Quality and use of materials affects credibility
o 3 kinds:
▪ Examples
• They provide concrete details that make ideas specific, personal,
and lively
• One of the most useful and add more credibility than other
supporting materials
• Want it to relate to the audience or make it relevant
• 4 types:
o specific instances are items that a speaker refers to in
passing
▪ ex: superheroes—batman, Spiderman, hulk, etc.
o brief examples (a.k.a. anecdotes or stories) are longer and
more detailed than specific instances
o extended/narrative examples are still longer and more
detailed/ vivid
▪ be careful as they take up a lot of time
o hypothetical examples can be of any type. They describe
an imaginary situation
▪ must be sufficiently detailed as it is them easier to
grasp
• tips on how to use examples:
o use eaples to iease the hua iteest fato of
your speech
o use examples to clarify and reinforce ideas
o use examples to relate concepts to your audience
o be careful when using narrative or extended examples due
to time
o use examples that are vivid and appropriately detailed
▪ Statistics
• Stats can be an effective way to support your various claims
• Can be cited in passing to clarify or strengthen points
• Can be used in combo to show magnitude or seriousness of an
issue
• Be aeful ot to use too a stats; people do’t deal ith
numbers well and will tune out
