Hearing loss: refers specifically to a decrease in hearing acuity or clarity as a malfunction of hearing mechanisms via deviation or change for the worse in either auditory structure or auditor function that differs significantly from normal. Handicap, disability and impairment: refers the impact of hearing loss on daily living activities. If loss impacts person negatively, it is considered a hearing handicap or a hearing impairment. Classification of severity: mild to profound (mild, moderate, severe, profound) Typically defined in decibels (refers to acoustic energy) (db): loudness. 16 db to 25 db: slight hearing loss. 26 db to 40 db: mild hearing loss. 41 db to 55 db: moderate hearing loss. 56 db to 70 db: moderately severe hearing loss. >91 db: profound hearing loss o o o o o o o o. Air-bone gap is how an audiologist diagnosis the severity of loss.
