Document Summary

The study of normal functions of a living organism and its component parts (including chemical and physical processes) Rule: the larger the organ system, the more complex. Size drives the evolution of the systems. Organ systems evolve to solve size problems. Bacteria (cell membrane) and humans (organ system) need: Energy/food, 02/gas exchange, waste removal (urine, sweat, co2, water (multiple functions)), heat, ions. As organisms get larger, surface area decreases. The amount of surface area per unit volume the organism has. Add folds to increase surface area (ex. folds in the brain) Same mass, different shape change the geometry. Cylinder is the best shape for increase surface area. Ideal shape: long, skinny, hollow folded tube. Most efficient in regards to surface area. Body parts in direct contact with environment. Direct contact means that it does not have to go through tissues to access. Exchange surfaces that have large surface areas. Digestive system lumen outside of body.
