BISC300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Sexually Transmitted Infection, Benzathine Benzylpenicillin, Treponema Pallidum
Document Summary
2 basic types of stis: bacterial. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (std) caused by the bacterium treponema pallidum. Syphilis can cause long-term complications if not adequately treated. Prevention: using condoms when having sex, monogamous relationships w/ negative partners, partner notification, can"t be prevented by washing the genitals, urinating, and/or douching after sex, blood tests to check. Treatment and vaccine: injections of long acting benzathine penicillin g. Can be cured w/ proper antibiotics but can"t undo damage: let sores heal before having sex again, doesn"t prevent reoccurance. Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (std) caused by infection with the neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. N. gonorrhoeae infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in women and men. N. gonorrhoeae can also infect the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum. Transmission: having vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
