Document Summary
Cells were first looked at by robert hook 1665. All organisms are made up of cells. The cell is the fundamental unit of life: has all of the properties that we associate with living things. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic components: phosphate group gives the head the hydrophilic quality. Can be represented in a variety of ways to emphasize overall structure. Saturated fatty acid chains lack double bonds, resulting in phospholipids with a straight structure that favors tight packing. Unsaturated fatty acids have one or more double bonds that introduce kinks in the phospholipids, reducing the tightness of packing. Amphipathic structure of cholesterol allows it to pack tightly into the phospholipid bilayer. Hydrophilic head group and hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail. Channel allows another a passage way through the membrane. Receptors waiting for a specific molecule to come along. Enzyme reacts with a molecule and changes it into something else. Anchors hold something on the outside of a membrane, serve as a structural purpose.
