Protein that adds a phosphate group to another protein or to itself, usually activating it. Hormone binds to two rtk subunits and they form a dimer. Protein builds a bridge between rtk and the ras protein, activating ras. Triggers a phosphorylation cascade of protein kinases. Activation of receptor is coupled with activation of g protein. When a g protein is bound to gtp, it is active. When it"s bound to gdp, it is inactive. Stimulates heart muscle cells to beat faster. Results when sugar (glucose) gets trapped in the blood instead of being taken up by cells and stored or used for energy. Insulin is a ligand because it binds to a receptor (insulin receptor) When someone has diabetes, insulin does not bind to the receptor and therefore cannot be transported/enter the cell.
