Viral encephalitis outbreak in pigs & pig farm workers. Known pig virus that has jumped into humans. Pig farmers vaccinated, insecticide fogging to reduce mosquito population. In 1999 - confirmed it was a novel virus not jev. Isolates were sent to cdc in fort collins and atlanta. Isolates from village of kampung baru sungai nipah, malyasia. Spread between farms and regions via pig movement. By the time the virus was identified it had spread and caused 130 more cases in malaysia and singapore. World health organization, centers for disease control and prevention and other organizations sent teams to malaysia. Including: experts in epidemiology, clinical microbiology, human and veterinary medicine, reservoir ecology, crisis management and logistics. Culled infected animals and neighboring farms, mandated ppe for those involved in investigation and control efforts. Due to the similarity with hev, survey of fruit bats initiated. 13 bat species in malaysia, including 2 flying fox species.
