The introduction of large numbers of people into contact with wildlife can result in the transmission of diseases to animals. Survey found 15% of 633 tourists visiting sepilok orangutan rehabilitation. Centre in sabah, malaysia reported having one or more symptoms of an infectious disease while visiting. Prevalence and number of pathogens, including zoonotic pathogens, greater in wild animals residing in or near urban environments. Examples: zoonotic roundworm in raccoons, borrelia burgdorferi in mice, chronic wasting disease in deer. Host and pathogen ecology to prevent zoonotic diseases. Fully understanding wildlife diseases necessitates a multidisciplinary (one health!) team, including ecologists, epidemiologists, medical professionals and infectious disease researchers.
