AGRI 224 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Mumps Virus, One Health, Vertically Transmitted Infection
Document Summary
The transition to permanent settlements and agriculture significantly increased the interaction between humans and animals. Previously the animal-human interface was that of hunter-prey. Animal husbandry and care associated with food production was a significant increase in interaction. Bordetella pertussis emerged in humans soon after animal domestication. Calicivirus, rotaviruses, salmonella emerged among swine, cattle and spread to humans. Continuum of contacts between humans and animals, either directly or indirectly through their products and their environments. All the ways we interact with animals and their products and they interact with us. Horizontal transmission: infection of zoonotic pathogens from animals to humans, causing individual cases of disease or outbreaks of various magnitudes. Vertical transmission: co-evolution of infectious agents that were carried on through evolution for early hominins, also called heirloom pathogens. Animal domestication also brought animal species into closer contact. This enhanced the spread of diseases between species. Domestic food animals, domestic pets and pests all interacted to a greater extent.
