Work and home were conceived of as separate spheres by most americans- mclass and wclass- by early 20th century. Reinforced masculine power at work and in major home decisions. Working class women and women of color always worked. 1901, of all employed women were widowed and therefore primary. 20th century: expansion of clerical jobs, filled by women. Many women"s jobs breadwinners limited by marriage bars. Positions women held were assumed to be low-skill. 1968: more than half of mothers of kids over 5 worked. By 1983: more than half of moms of kids under 5. By 2013: 58% of moms of kids under 5 are employed. The social structures of breadwinning fathers/caregiving mothers are distinct minority. Women continue to do more housework and routine childcare, even on top of theirs jobs for pay.
