Document Summary

Metaphors for motivation: person as scientist. Voluntary response by individual- analyzes internal and external info, hypothesizes about the foundation for events and actions of others (person as judge), and develops goals and action plans (person as intentional: person as machine. Person is pushed by internal needs, pulled by environment. Automatic response by individual- responds to needs and drives, and to external stimuli and reinforcement. Bounded rationality- idea that when individuals make decisions, their rationality is limited by the info they have, the cognitive limitations of their minds, and the time available to make the decision: optimize- to maximize/minimize. Do well in the short run: high motivation/low ability = may be better or worse than low motivation/high ability depending on situation. Do better in the long run: situational constraints (added to formula later on) Include political, environmental, social (language), and financial (resources) In a school setting, these impact students and teachers. Work impacts life- stress, other aspects carry over, etc.
