Consciousness: knowing or being aware of ongoing events, sense of awareness of one"s environment, may involve self-awareness, has evolved over time. Drugs: psychoactive drugs alter consciousness, terms: Tolerance: a build-up of immunity to a drug, so more of the drug is needed to feel the same effect after prolonged use. Withdrawal: body must adapt to substance-loss in the system. Illegal drugs: cocaine and amphetamines, lsd, ecstasy. Associated with dehydration, hallucinations, paranoia, elevated blood pressure, and death. Associated with panic attacks, anxiety, and hallucinogen persisting perception disorder. Triggers serotonin (and other chemical) release and slows its reuptake. Increases heart rate and blood pressure, reduces fatigue, improves cognitive performance and muscle relaxation. Psychological effects are aggression, risky behavior, poor motor coordination. Can lead to death if blood alcohol level is too high: marijuana. Relaxation and euphoria, increased awareness of sensation, alteration of conscious perception, auditory/visual illusions, and derealization.
