Responding to Social
Norms

▪ Attitudes change with actions
• Bystander Effect – fewer people help when others are available
• Presees of others leads to diffusio of resposiility
• If we do help, why?
1. Gender: women are more likely to help than men
2. Help people similar to themselves (in-group bias)
3. Small towns/ rural areas: fewer people around = more likely to be helped
• Strongest predictor of helping: mood
o Better mood = more likely to help
• Some of our mimicry of other people is automatic, eg.
1. Contagious yawning, folding arms, touching face
2. Adopting regional accents
3. Mood
4. Adopting coping styles (usually comes from parents)
• Unconsciously mimic others because
1. We are empathetic towards others
2. Empathy brings rapport
3. We are social beings
▪ Survival instinct: get along with others to survive
• Asch Conformity Studies
• What influences makes us conform
o Normative influence – social effect, fear social rejection despite own
dissenting views
o Informational influence – you are unsure about how to behave in a new
situation, behave like others around you (not seeking social approval)
• We are most likely to conform when:
1. You are impressionable (people w/o strong beliefs likely to conform)
2. Your group is medium sized (4-5 people)
3. You admire the group/ people in the group
4. You feel inferior or incompetent
