• Social facilitation – individual performance is intensified when you are observed

o For experts: likely to perform better (bigger audience = better
performance)
• Experience arousal from crowds
o Increase anxiety for newbies
o Increase motivation for experts
• Social loafing – tendency of people in a group to show less effort when not held
individually accountable
o Likely to happen when:
▪ Perso feels like they a’t otriute to group are’t apale)
▪ Person feels like they can cheat if there are equal rewards in group
(capable, but lazy)
• Deindividuation – loss of self-awareness and self-restraint/ do things against own
morals because other people are doing it

▪ Anonymous among other people
▪ Aroused (eg. huge fights after a big game)
• Eg. Stanford Prison Experiment: guard uniforms and
mirrored glasses simulated anonymity
• Groupthink – in pursuit of social harmony (and avoidance of open disagreement),
groups will make decisions without an open exchange of ideas

options
• Eg. The Peoples’ Teple y Ji Joes, 1973
o Religious communism → built church in Midwest on utopian idea of
equality for all members
▪ Appealed to marginalized people (majority members were black
women)
o Church moved to California and established over 15 locations

background checks on attendees to appear god-like
o Negatie reports fro forer eers surfaed aout The Peoples’
Temple
