Sensorimotor Stage
(birth – 2 months)
• Reflexes – responses that do not have to be learned
• Rooting reflex – newborn turns head towards a stimulus in hopes of food
• Sucking reflex – once placed in mouth, child will suck
• Crying when hungry – gets attention of parents for feeding
• Preference for human faces – may increase chances of eye contact with people
for food, as opposed to a wolf face for death
• Explore world with mouth
• 6-8 months develop object permanence
o Idea that object exists even beyond sight
o Eg. peek-a-boo
• 18 months, emotional development
• Rogue Test – place lipstick mark on ay’s ose ad plae ay i frot of
mirror
o If baby reaches for mirror, baby is not self-aware
o If baby touches own nose, baby is self-aware
o 9 to 14 months
o Test may not work with identical twins
• 2-6 yrs old, children are preoperational
o Idea of conservation unset
o Eg. Glass 1 has more liquid than glass 2 (but the volume is the same)
