Tartar = mongols/central asian nomads in case of ibn al-athir"s great history . Military defense didn"t know how to defend from mongols so they took it after days of siege. Mongols were frequently the side with the smaller army, though they won most battles. Bring dead bodies from last conquered city to next target one and pile up bodies and use as ladder to climb city walls. Played huge role in integration of eurasia. Full of history of contradiction and conflict bc there are so many cultures. Turkey considers itself eu even though most of it is in asia. Includes east asia all the way up to western europe. Periodization is also a form of categorization. Things are fluid in both humanities and social sciences. Islamic world is a new/loaded term so must be used carefully.
