Military leaders on the rise (who eventually become leaders of republics) Standing armies- actively expanding state territories; not voluntary but paid (thanks to taxes) Gunpowder states: states constituted of organized violence, gunpowder, and use of weapons for explosives (muskets, cannons, etc) Fought w/ tactics on major battlefields w/ gunpowder. Ottomans: expansion of global commerce through import of goods (silver) from. Huge role in developing gunpowder warfare; most enduring imperial power in world history; most multicultural empire in human history; expansionist and militaristic. Recruited soldiers from christian population and trained and forcefully converted to islam. Constantinople 1453- ottomans conquer and convert church into mosque. Siege of vienna 1529- ottomans almost won but then didn"t. Ultimately failed bc cannons couldn"t destroy vienna walls.
