MMW 12 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Synoptic Gospels, Doctor Of The Church, Baptism Of Jesus
Document Summary
Gospels were written by disciples of jesus. Gospel according to mark c. early 70s. Least christian -- jesus is a jew. Jesus doesn"t really preach, he"s more of an exorcist and a healer. John the baptist baptizes people with water, metaphorically washing them of sin. God comes to jesus and tells him he is his son and then jesus goes into the desert for 40 days. Disciples don"t see him as a prophet, but as the messiah. Jesus reveals his divine mission through describing his death. Mark, luke, and matthew are synoptic gospels. In their tellings of the story of jesus, they mostly agree with each other. Christ (greek) mashiach (hebrew) messiah anointed one. Testament (latin) b"rit (hebrew) covenant. 4 types of writing in the new testament. Gospel according to luke c. mid 90s. Luke is not jewish, he"s a greek doctor. When he writes, christianity is making a full split from judaism. Begins with adam and eve, not jesus.
