HILA 132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Sales Tax, Xenophobia, Neoliberalism
Document Summary
It is important to discuss these myths because misinformation results in wrong decisions, hate, feat, etc: myths. Immigrations take our jobs: false because neoliberal capitalism is what is taking jobs, companies are outsourcing jobs because it is cheaper elsewhere, saves them the need to pay high american wages, benefits, etc. International consumer demand plays a large part in this: automation is also taking jobs, robots do not need to be paid, do work nonetheless. Immigration is a race issue: false because fear against migration is rooted in social and economic instability, great depression xenophobia is a prime example. Immigrants keep wage down by accepting lower wages. Immigrants accept wages that they are given and do not unionize because scared about losing jobs and having to leave the country: general trend is that immigrants seldom form unions to fight for more rights.
