HILA 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Julio Argentino Roca, Paraguayan War, Empanada
Document Summary
Ba was still a frontier town in some ways even after viceroy had been set up. Surrounded by indians, still contained mud huts. Was able to arm itself with stronger weapons (firearms, cannons, trained militia) as technology and economy boomed. Women were involved in politics, but couldn"t vote. Upper class women were literate/educated and magazines about womanhood were even in circulation/ early cosmos. Merchants began to rely on british ships and thus had to rely on british money- but the british (when ba was under rosas) wanted free trade/lower tariffs. Tariffs were revenue tariffs instead of protection tariffs (except for agriculture ones those were protection) Streets narrow, lots of street vending, horses/mules, people thrown together, travel in carts, gods brought in from countryside on mules soon disappears to progress. Period of political domination via series of alliances not necessarily between liberals and conservatives bc everyone had tons of opinions. Pattern of trade-driven growth that can now finance a national government.
