HIEU 158 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Theodor Morell, Italian Peninsula, Pietro Badoglio
Document Summary
Hitler couldn"t let the second world war end like the first one. Didn"t want to surrender and for sure lose everything that he worked for. Kind of believed in some sort of continuity of his ideas after his death. German defeat in stalingrad in november 1942 was the real turning point in the war. Allies land in sicily in 1943 and move up the italian peninsula. The italians had pioneered the fascist coup in 1922. The fascists are hanged upside down at a gas station until they die. Long term problems for germany were the lack of gasoline, raw materials, ability to produce weapons, and manpower. This made jewish labor appear necessary, but actually it wasn"t. Non aryan basically-slave workers were brought in for manpower. Romania, hungary, and slovakia see the fate of mussolini and fear that germany might not be able to protect them from the russian advance. Very important to the fate of the hungarian jews.
