COGS 11 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Multisensory Integration, Phantom Limb, Hemispatial Neglect
Document Summary
Somatosensory, visual, auditory, and motor nerves meet at one point in the right parietal lobe. One cohesive unit, the four corners of the brain. Innovating movement, our (primary) senses -> organizes information tonatorily (through tone) and integrates it with all our other senses. When things fail to integrate that"s when things go crazy (disorders) The sensory cortex has genitals in its mapping, the motor cortex does not. The right parietal lobe has 2 mappings, but the left only has one -> damage of the the right parietal lobe typically leads to large deficits. Left side of sensory space becomes nonexistent. Only happens when you have a stroke in your right parietal lobe. Your body is not just a vehicle for your brain to cruise around in. The relationship is perfectly reciprocal: your body and brain exist for each other Meaning is rooted in agency (the ability to act and choose), and agency depends on embodiment.
