BIMM 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: List Of Microbiota Species Of The Lower Reproductive Tract Of Women, Meconium, Amniotic Fluid
Document Summary
Meconium: first bowel movement of a newborn; something the baby has before eating. Represents source of microbes of babies: study tried to culture meconium (without next-generation sequencing) from 21 newborns. Consists of e. faecalis, s. epidermidis, e. coli, and enterobacter species: labeled e. faecium, administered to pregnant mice orally during 2nd half of pregnancy, and was detected in meconium. The balance of types of microbes allows optimal ph in body: optimal ph in humans between 7. 2 7. 5, most bacteria that live in symbiosis with us (or are human pathogens) grow between ph. 6. 5 and 7. 5: some bacteria live in very high or low ph, molds and yeasts preferentially grow between ph 4 and 6. In the vagina, the ph is acidic: lactobacillus part of normal microbiome. Extremely important because they can live in ph lower than 4, and helps keep ph low: candida usually live at ph 4-4. 5, which can cause vaginitis. Lactobacillus keeps ph low to inhibit candida overgrowth.
