Document Summary

Earth"s physical systems - atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. Energy is lost to the surroundings as heat, light, sound, vibration, or movement. Geothermal energy from radioactive isotopes and rotational energy from spinning of the earth is internal. Most energy is lost to the surroundings as heat. Energy is the capacity to do work and cause change. Work is accomplished when an object is moved against an opposing force, such as friction. Potential energy/chemical energy is energy that an object possesses as a result of its location or physical arrangement (stored energy) 1st law of thermodynamics: energy in the universe is constant. A water molecule sitting at the top of a waterfall has a defined amount of potential energy. As the molecule falls, some of this stored energy is converted to kinetic energy. When the molecule strikes the rocks below, its energy of motion is converted to thermal, mechanical, and sound energy. The molecule"s potential energy is now much lower.
