oRenal corpuscule
Glomerulus
Bowman’s capsule
Once the plasma enters the Bowman’s capsule, it is
considered filtrate. Big proteins and RBCs won’t
cross capillary wall, but solutes, water, and ions can
be filtrated through the glomerulus into the
Bowman’s capsule
oRenal tubule
Filtrate moves into proximal convoluted tubule.
Most of the reabsorption occurs here, where fluid is
moved from lumen of nephron back to interstitial
and peritubular capillaries; recycle material that you
don’t want to secrete/remove as waste. Ex: sodium,
glucose, water. Proximal tubule located in the renal
cortex
Osmolarity of filtrate is 300 mOsm
Nephron loop (loop of Henle)
Descending limb: permeable to water; where
water reabsorption takes place
Ascending limb: impermeable to water, but
solutes are transported from lumen into
circulation; where solute reabsorption takes place
Located deep into the renal medulla
Filtrate osmolarity changes as it goes through loop
Distal nephron: distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct
Can reabsorb water and certain solutes depending on
hormonal regulation

oFiltration: occurs at renal corpuscule
oReabsorption: occurs throughout nephron; movement of
solutes and fluid out of nephron into peritubular capillary
oSecretion: movement of things from
circulation/peritubular capillaries to lumen nephron to be
secreted
oAmount filtered – amount reabsorbed + amount secreted
= amount of solute excreted
