ANTH 23 Lecture 4: Immigration & Ethnicity
Document Summary
Not just immigrants being melted down, immigrants are bringing in new forms of culture, etc. Melting pot not for everybody -- not everybody is seen as being worthy to participate in society/being melted down. Silvia pedraza: argues that success of immigrants is determined by initial resources, nature of migration, context of their reception. Cultural assimilation: adoption of cultural patterns, ex: language, behavior, values, foods. Structural assimilation: full integration of immigrants into major institutions. Ex: health care treatment of mexicans versus cubans. Contrast between these can measure extent of assimilation. Race relations cycle: contact between different races, competition for resources/jobs/etc, and accommodation/acceptance of one another, culminating in eventual assimilation of immigrants. Does not hold true for many examples. Not all immigrants or race/ethnic groups are the same. Internal colonialism: involuntary migration of non-european minorities confines them to underprivileged role in economy. Incorporation: how immigrants become a part of society, differences between traditional/internal colonialism.
