Document Summary

As we develop greater knowledge of the potential impacts of climate change, everyone from public agencies to private companies to families and individuals are starting to consider whether and how they should prepare. The climatic changes we are discussing here are those associated with the increased loading of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. These loadings, much of which occur due to fossil fuel burning, mean that more of the sun"s energy either directly or via re-radiation from the earth, will remain in the atmosphere and not get vented back into space. As more heat is captured, the global climate will slowly warm. A slow increase in global average mean temperature is one possible result of climate change. With increased energy in the atmosphere, there will be more evaporation of surface waters (primarily the ocean), so future storms will have more water and energy available to them and be more intense.
