Document Summary
Hms beagle: collected specimens from all around the world. How darwin approached evolution: natural selection. Back to aristotle: comte du buffon, carlus linnaeus classified all life on earth, jean baptiste lamark influenced darwin. If a giraffe stretched its neck a lot, their children would be born with stretched necks. (of course, this isn"t true) Lamark stressed the importance of environment on evolution. What is required for natural selection: all individuals vary. Examples: different shaped ears and teeth on humans: variation is heritable. We inherit variation from our parents like eye color, skin color, resistance to disease: more individuals are born into a population that can survive and reproduce. Access to food, shelter and mates: there is a natural selection between individuals to determine which survive and reproduce. More fit and able individuals will pass on their variations/genes in higher frequencies.
