PSY 102 Lecture 11: #11 intergroup processes
Document Summary
Prejudice: feelings and emotions held towards a person based on her or his group. Exists because we fundamentally see ourselves as part of groups. Percentage of people who openly admit racist attitudes is very small. People act unprejudiced but maintain prejudiced attitudes. Prejudiced attitudes reveal themselves in indirect ways. Realistic conflict theory: prejudice (intergroup conflict) comes from perceived competition for limited resources. Groups of 11-12 year old boys competed for prizes. Caused both groups to develop negative attitudes and behaviors towards the outgroup. Social identity theory: self-esteem is linked to ingroup standing. Ingroup = source of self-concept and self-esteem. Basking in reflected glory (birging) celebrating ingroup"s success as your own. Ingroup favoritism ( in-group bias ): motivation for high self-esteem view one"s group. Students more likely to wear college apparel after a football game win favorably. Outgroup derogation: us vs them leads to viewing the outgroup unfavorably. Intergroup bias = ingroup favoritism + outgroup derogation.
