PSY 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Edward Thorndike, Puzzle Box, Operant Conditioning Chamber
Document Summary
Classical: one stimulus predicts another stimulus (we don"t really have control over it) Pair us with cs to produce cr (normally same action as ur) Operant: one behavior predicts a specific outcome (we have more control) Elicited: automatically or reflexively triggered by the presentation of a stimulus. Emitted: behavior that is voluntarily produced by the organism to obtain a certain outcome. Doctoral dissertation on animal intelligence (specifically cats) Animal put in cage with food right outside, had to pull lever to open cage. In beginning, animal would struggle and try to reach through the cage for food. As experiment continued, animals slowly learned to push lever to open cage. Eventually could perform task quickly to get food. Insight learning vs. trial and error learning: Learning curve: more like z shape; success= nonexistent until sudden realization, which drastically reduces escape time/ time necessary to obtain reward.
