PHIL 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Abortion-Rights Movements, Anti-Abortion Movements, If And Only If
Lecture 5/7:
• Abortion Part 1- Unconvincing arguments
• pro life vs pro choice
• Arguments
o A1- Embryo is/ has X
▪ Example- X = alive
▪ A1- embryo is alive
▪ A2-…life of something that is alive
o A2- it’s always seriously immoral to end the life of something that is X
o A3- So it’s seriously immoral to end the life of the embryo
o B1- The embryo is not Y
▪ Example – Y = separate
▪ B1- embryo is not separate
▪ B2-… only if it’s separate
▪ Something is separate iff it’s not physically attached to another human
o B2- it’s seriously immoral to end the life of something only if it’s Y
o B3- So it’s not seriously immoral to end the life of the embryo
• Abortion Part 2 Thompson
• Right to life argument
o A1- embryo has right to life
o A2- if embryo has right to life, then abortion is seriously immoral
o A3- abortion is seriously immoral
• Argument for A2
o B1- If X has right to life, and X needs to have Y to survive, then it is seriously
immoral to deprive X of Y
o B2-embryo needs to be in the womb to survive
o A2- So, if embryo has right to life, then abortion is seriously immoral
