Virgin soil epidemics between c. 1520-1650 killed maybe 85% of america"s population. Struggle against the muslims-part of national identity. Religious wars of conquest and settlement: an iberian tradition. Emergence of spain and portugal as kingdoms- collect taxes. Church and state working together to conquest. Muslim inhabitants are given option to convert or leave: iberian monarchies wants all people to be christian, pushes christian settlement southwards. Economic depression, much of the 15th c: search for new markets, scarcity of gold, after black death. Castile, aragon united by marriage, 1469: two constituent parts of spain, isabella and ferdinand marry. Close alliance of church hierarch with kings of castile, portugal: spanish monarchs have control over church. The crown as defender of the church and orthodoxy. Opening of straits of gibraltar to christian shipping from 1270s.
