Lobby to governments to get funding or to rally supporters from the public. Generates knowledge and research to pass on to future generations. Done in: labs, universities, private sector, out in field, government. Hold meetings, publish journals, elect officers, bestow awards (money/prestige) Serve a gatekeeping role: who is or isn"t a member. Serve a communication role with the outside (external) world. Requires a lot of funding from government. People who are doing science: only white men women, different ages, races, religions, social status, etc. Ex. medical specification and more difficult to flow across boundaries. Derek de solla price: little science and big science . Little science: done in earlier centuries by individuals often for own amusement and at own expense. Individuals could not afford all the expensive equipment or teams.
