Document Summary

Ess 3 notes: diabetes mellitus affects how body uses blood glucose, left untreated, life threatening complications. In 1922, research purified hormone insulin- when injected, patins improved: steady supply of blood glucose in blood stream: intestine (food) and liver (glycogen, glood glucose homeostasis: insulin (moves glucose from blood into cells) and glucagon. Increase in blood sugar, insulin released; decrease in blood sugar, glucagon released: diabetes related to abnormal utilization & regulation of glucose by the body. Muscle & adipose tissues can"t take up glucose: blood glucose levels increase. Excess glucose spills over into urine: monitor bad glucose & track food choices and activity. Natives: more common in older adults than younger adults & children, primarily attributed to prevalence of obesity & decreased physical activity. Genetics & lifestyle also affect risk: occurs when cells less sensitive to effects of insulin even in pancreas producing insulin.
