Document Summary

Earth 7: dinosaurs |lecture 5: a brief history of life and deep time. Note taker: deanna coughlin (714) 235-7896; deannajasmine@yahoo. com lecture 5: Need to determine shared derived characters aka evolutionary novelties. Homologous: similar due to inheritance from common ancestor. Convergent: similar but not inherited from a common ancestor (independently acquired) Features that are similar but not inherited from common ancestor. Fundamentally the same structures inherited form a common ancestor. Feathers and wings are homologous in eagles and ducks. Lots of characters needed to construct good trees. Defining character, derived character, evolutionary novelty all mean the same thing. Four limbs is an evolutionary novelty that defines tetrapods. Snakes don t have limbs but are still tetrapods. Monophyletic groups aka clades: include ancestor and all descendants (good); based on shared evolutionary novelty. Paraphyletic: group based on the absence of evolutionary novelties; includes an ancestor and some but not all of its descendants. Pl. and mt. susceptible to same antibiotics as bacteria.
