Cultural context in career counseling: what does cultural context mean, who people are at the cultural level. Women & work: current trends: more than half of the current paid workforce is women (us, approximately 75% of women aged 25 - 55 are currently employed; a 70% increase in 3 decades. Larger base of workers: economic benefits for families, material resources for women, mental and physical health benefits, reduction of discriminatory practices and policies in workplaces. Linked to shifts in women"s role within families. Continued challenged: covert & subtle discrimination, continued disadvantages for women, two full-time jobs (working your actual job and taking care of the house) Lack of structural support (ex: affordable child care and flexible schedules) Invisible economy : glass ceiling: moving up to a certain point - invisible barrier (can see through but can"t get through) Sticky floor: inability to move up at all stuck to the ground or lowest level.
