ARTHI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Pont Du Gard, Capitoline Hill, Pantheon, Rome
Document Summary
Actually started as a confederation of 7 hill cities. Ager romanus - great area on for agriculture. Natural organic city growth shown by change in area on maps. One point of approach gives axiality along central axis. Similar to etruscan temple as elevated with front entrance. Pushed walls out to columns maximizing space of cella. Everyday structure but still looks beautiful with lots of arches. Very unlike our aqueduct (pretty much just a trough in the ground) As augustus took power, he maintained rome"s power in building. Vitruvius dedicated to augustus, wrote the 10 books of architecture, which became the treatise of roman architecture and building. Colossal statue of nero nearby gives it its name. Used for gladiatorial games then place of martyrdom for christian saints. Lowest level was doric, 2nd is ionic, 3rd is corinthian. But all have same entablature otherwise it would look weird. Strength allowed for large structures like the colosseum.
