ARTHI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Demetrius I Soter, Prima Porta, Caelus
Document Summary
31 bc augustus - from nation to empire - imperial period. But no crown so most likely a general. Odd because people were not cast in the nude in that period. Status of patrician - imperial period but in republican style - 15 ad. Busts were created of ancestors but only patrician class allowed to. Octavius caesar, great-nephew of julius caesar defeated antony and cleopatra. Found in the villa of lydia in the town of prima porta, outside rome. Original was bronze, this is a marble copy, now held in the vatican. Claims his family descended from aeneas, the founder of rome, and a son of venus. Idealized, they defeated the parthians, not nice negotiation like shown. His victory was divinely ordained, shown allegorically via presence of gods (diana, caelus, etc. ) Followed by cupid, also showing his lineage from the gods. Ara pacis augustae, altar of augustus, commemorates pax romana.
