Rape culture jokes, tv, music, advertising, legal jargon, laws, words and imagery, that make violence against women and sexual coercion seem so normal that people believe that rape is inevitable. Colonial america expected men to be masters of self-restraint while at the same time dominant overpowering male sexuality was at times eroticized and idealized. Anglo american manhood was largely equated with becoming an independent householder: tied to marriage patriarchal authority over women.
