Public health has always been around, there is evidence that individuals who lived together in a society put effort in to move ahead. Concerned about lots of people organized in cities. They wanted to get the waste out of london to keep the people from getting sick: public health services (1950-1980) Very interested in the relationship between smoking and illness. Soldiers and celebrities were always smoking - created a status, and normal behavior. Harvard convinced people of framingham, ma to partake in this study. First community based study - still going on. Looking to see what caused illnesses in populations. Prevention (e. g. wearing a helmet when you ride your bike: chronic disease control (1980-2000) Nurses were the biggest smokers - it was easier to get out of what was super emotional and stressful and be able to go have a smoke. Teachers also had stress so they would get their 5 minute break to get away and smoke.
