Meninges that surround the brain also surround spinal cord: skull, periosteum, bone, epidural space mostly adipose tissue, dura mater, arachnoid mater, subarachnoid mater contains cerebral spinal fluid, pia mater. Spinal segments associated with one vertebra and one dorsal/ventral nerve pair: cervical- head, neck, shoulders, thoracic trunk muscles, chest wall, organs, lumbar lower back, legs, feet, sacral bowel, bladder, sexual functions, coccygeal. Each spine segment innervates a dermatome (associated area of body, sensory and motor) Injuries: complete no movement or sensation below injury. Epidural anesthesia: placement of nerve blocking drug (lidocaine) into epidural space that surrounds cord, placement of needle determines which part of body is anesthetized. Anatomy (ventral dorsal: vertebral body, spinal nerve, spinal cord, pedicle, spinous process, ventral intervertebral discs, gray matter (cid:862)hor(cid:374)s(cid:863) full of (cid:272)ell (cid:271)odies, few axo(cid:374)s (pseudounipolar/ one long axon) Substantia gelatinosa pain and temp info. Nucleus proprius somatic and visceral proprioceptive info: white matter composed of only myelinated axons, surrounds gray matter.
