PSYC 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Upper Class, Elaboration Likelihood Model, Reference Group
Document Summary
Participants first completed a long and boring task. Then they reported how much they really enjoyed the task. Children are given a set of toys and asked to rate each one. Then told that they could play with any of the toys, except for one (child"s second favorite). Those who did not play with the toy after receiving a mild threat needed to justify their inaction, so many devalued the toy. Those who did not play with the toy because they were severely threatened experienced no dissonance and liked the toy as much as or more than before. Mild threats of punishment are a weak reason for resisting something that is desired, so attitude changes to rationalize behavior. That toy isn"t so great after all . Severe threats are a good reason to resist a behavior bu may result in the behavior. Is cognitive dissonance universal? seeming even more appealing. Prime: preferences of the average college student.
