PSYC 2200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Circadian Clock, Circadian Rhythm, Pineal Gland
Document Summary
Measured rodents on activity and when there was no activity it could be inferred that rodent was asleep. The suprachiasmatic nucleus is a part of the hypothalamus, also connected to the pineal gland. It receives light input from the retina and sends signals to the pineal gland, which modulates daily and seasonal rhythms via hormone release (i. e. , melatonin) During free running state there is no pattern whatsoever. Scn plays important role in modulating internal clock. Can see that animal will shift circadian rhythm. After a couple of days, time schedule is reset. Specialized ganglion cells (containing melanopsin) respond to light, don"t register visual information just an indirect measure of how light is it out . In light minimal activity meaning animal was sleeping and night they were active. A lot easier to adjust to time zone if youre getting out and seeing the sun throughout the day.
