Why do we care about peers: peer domain is primary social world, equals, training ground for development of social competencies, peer relationships are associated with important outcomes such as, self esteem, academic achievement, school drop-out, emotional well-being. Play: much time young children are with peers is spent playing, not just for fun, serves developmental functions too, outlet for physical energy and emotions, manage anxiety, pretending advances cognitive development, practice social skills, conflict resolution. Indices of peer functioning: peer group status. Increased drug use: problem drinking, criminal activity, difficulties in romantic relationships, low peer status. Peer influence and risk-taking: early, amygdala development, emotions late, prefrontal cortex development reasoning and decision making these together lead to risk taking, adolescents show increased risk-taking when in front of peers, brain functioning. What makes friendship so special: unique relationships characterized by, reciprocity, affection, voluntary commitment, friendships may be formed based on, proximity, similarity, shared interests/activities, shared values/goals.
