Document Summary

Water transports nutrients to cells & removes waste from cells. Water transports hormones, enzymes, rbc"s, wbc"s & platelets. Water balances to keep at steady state. Intracellular (icf)/ within cells = 2/3 of water, low in calcium, high in potassium (k+), phosphorus & magnesium. Extracellular (ecf)/ outside of cells = high in na & cl, moderate bicarb, ca++ & low in k+ Intravascular fluid (plasma) liquid component of blood. Blood tests show only extracellular fluids (what is circulating in blood) Not getting value of calcium in bone or in cells when doing total calcium blood work. Water sources: ingested liquids/foods & by-product of metabolism or parental iv. Intake generally 2. 6 l/day (1. 3 l is from drinking water) Fluid loss sensible (measure urine, stool, wounds, gi losses) Insensible cannot measure/see evaporation & breathing. Isotonic = equal osmotic pressures, same osmolarity as normal body fluids (blood) ex: normal saline , Expands (extracellular fluid space) volume without shifting fluid from one compartment to another.
