Important when thinking about treatment (harder to control environment when it creates spores) Missing mitochondria (electron transport and cellular respiration not happening, happens in cytoplasm) The cell envelope: layers that surround the cell. Endotoxins (lipopolysaccharide) -when cell is lysed = dangerous. Gram positive: whole other layer outside of lipid bilayer, thick layer of peptidoglycan (natural affinity towards water soluble) Gram positive vs. gram negative: presence of lipopolysaccharide (in gram neg) end up being endotoxins if cell is lysed* The cell wall - layers between cytoplasmic membrane & capsule. Special channels (porins) allow hydrophilic compounds to pass.
